There is no other task but to know your own original face. This is called independence; the spirit is clear and free. If you say there is some particular doctrine or patriarchy, you’ll be totally cheated. Just look into your heart; there is a transcendental clarity. Just have no greed and no dependency, and you will immediately attain certainty.

— Yen-t’ou (828-887)

Do not look for innate knowledge
In the mind that has already gone astray.
Look for it in the mind
Before it has gone astray.
The essence of mind is our true
Nature. We cannot depart
From our true nature.
So how can mind get lost
And go astray?
When we say we have lost it,
It means it is frantically
Pursuing things.
— Qian Dehong (1495-1574)

All things are free-flowing, untrammeled. What bondage is there, what entanglement? You create your own difficulty and ease therein. The mind source pervades the ten directions with one continuity; those of the most excellent faculties understand naturally.

The human mind is
Empty and illuminated:
Its essence is profoundly clear.
Originally it is leaping
With life:
How could it be held fast?
— Wang Ji (1498-1583)

Mountain Retreat

Living deep in the mountains
I’ve grown fond of the
Solitary sound of the singing pines;
On days the wind does not blow,
How lonely it is!
— Rengetsu
