There are names,
Such as Buddha, God, or Heavenly Way;
But they all point to the mind
Which is nothingness.
Live always
With the mind of total nothingness,
And the evils that come to you
Will dissipate completely.

The Mind of sages is subtle, hidden, beyond understanding and knowing. Great Enlightenment is dark and mysterious, wordless and speechless.

Life after life, may I never misunderstand
The Buddha Dharma;
May I attain enlightenment myself
And enlighten others;
May I always be free from discrimination
Between self and others;
May I, through skillful means,
Guide sentient beings
Into the same truth.

A quiet residence
With hardly a neighbor—
A grass-covered path
And deserted garden.
Birds roost
In pond-side trees;
In moonlight,
A monk knocks at a gate.
Crossing a bridge
Unfolds more wilderness;
Moving a rock
Moves the base of clouds.

I’ve been absent for some time But now I’m back;
I won’t break our vow
Of retreat.

Color-of-Nature Gorge

To reach Chrysanthemum River
I always follow Ch’ing Gorge Stream
Through the mountains, through
Ten thousand twists and turns—
A fine trip and not a hundred li.
The noise among boulders is tremendous,
The view into pines, serene;
Swirling water chestnut,
Distilled reflections of reeds.
My original mind is unstriving,
A pure, tranquil stream, like that.
I could stay on some big rock slab
Fishing, forever.
